Deer Class - Week 3

This week in Deer class, it was all about likes and dislikes.  Not only did the students learn lots of new food-related vocabulary, but also how to express their preferences toward those foods.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of my students would choose vegetables over pizza.  We spent much of the week studying these new vocabulary and sentence patterns.  The students behaved very well this week and as a reward, we used our new vocabulary and sentence structures to have a play restaurant in the classroom on Friday.  Students got to take turns being the waiters and customers.  Everyone had so much fun!  I'll post pictures of our restaurant on Flikr soon.

In phonics this week, we learned all about the letter "d".  The students learned the new phonics rhyme, "Ducks a-digging, d-d-d" as well as lots of new "d" vocabulary.  I think there favorites of the "d" vocabulary were "dinosaur" and "dad".

In math this week, we talked about a point and line.  We tried hard to convey that a line is really just many points place closely together.  The students all got to take turns making lines and points on the whiteboard as well as with little colored discs on the floor.  They had a lot of fun.

Continuing with our food theme from English, in Science this week we talked about the importance of eating healthy.  We divided our food vocabulary into a "healthy food" list and a "junk food" list.  The kids had a lot of fun offering up suggestions for each list.

This week's song was "Father Abraham", which teaches muscle coordination.  It's a very active song, so the students love it.

Next week, on Tuesday, we are planning to take the class to the Zoo.  Jessica and I have been preparing them for that by implementing a partner system.  Each student has a partner who he/she eats and sits next to, this way when we go to the Zoo, if everyone stays with their partner it will much easier for them to enjoy the Zoo in a safe and orderly fashion.

And now...here are this week's Star Students: Ryan, Stella, Lucas, Elly, Rueben*, Candy, Herman, and Mars.  These students earned this award by earning stars for especially good behavior on a given day of class.  Great job!

Deer Class - Week 2

What an exciting week this has been!  I hope that you all had a lovely holiday on Monday.  Family time is such a wonderful thing.  As for myself I spent the holiday at 沙崙海灘, then I returned home to finish up the lesson plans for week two.  It was a nice holiday, although I did get a bit sunburned.  =)

This week in Deer Class we covered a lot of ground.  We moved right along in English, learning about hygiene and how to ask politely for things/permission with the "May I...please?" sentence structure.  The children learned the new grammar very quickly and I was so proud of them all.  The highlight in English this week was when we transformed the classroom into a washroom and the children all took a turn pretending to wash their hands.  We also used an giant toothbrush and set of teeth so the children could practice good oral hygiene as well.  I really stressed with them the importance of using soap every time you wash your hand.

In Phonics this week, we studied the hard "c" sound using the phonics rhyme "caterpillars crawling, c-c-c".   The students are still getting used to distinguishing one letter from another, which is why we fully intend to review previously learned materials every week.   In this way, we will prepare the children to transition to the next level without any problems.

In math, we delved deeper into the colors of the rainbow.  I taught the students a song with colors in this order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.  We will review this song in the future, to really reinforce which word goes with which color.

In science this week, we learned all about the parts of the hand: hand, fingers, fingernails, thumb, pinky, etc.  A favorite activity for the class was making rain with our hands.  If you would like to make rain with your children at home, this is what you need to do:

  1. Everyone rub their hands together.  This should make a very soft sound, like the beginning of the rainfall.
  2. Next, snap your fingers.  (If you or you children are unable to snap your fingers, you may make click sounds with your mouth instead)
  3. Then clap your hands, building the noise as if the rain is falling harder.
  4. The climax of the storm comes when you stomp your feet and slap your knees.
  5. Slowly, revert back to clapping as the storm dies down.
  6. Then go back to the snapping/click sounds
  7. Finally rub your hands together again
The students really enjoyed this activity a great deal and are sure to love doing it with you at home. If you decide to try it at home, please leave a comment below and let me know how it went.

In music this week, we learned "This is the way we wash our hands" to the tune of "Here we go 'round the mulberry bush".  The students had a lot of fun with this song, especially as it tied in with their English lesson this week.

All in all, we had a good week and learned lots of new and interesting things.

And now, this weeks Star Students are Rueben*, Stella, Candy*, Randy, Jingo, and Elly.  Congratulations to them for their hard work.  As I mentioned before, the Star Student award is awarded each day to the students who earn the most stars for class participation and good classroom behavior.  Bravo!

Deer Class - Week 1

Dear Parents,

This week we began our fall semester with a strong start.  Most of our class is continuing from the summer classes, so they are already accustomed to the class environment which allows us to get right down to the new teaching material.

This week we covered greetings (with the phrases "Good morning!", "My name is...", "What is your name", "How are you today?" and "I'm fine, how are you?"), my face (going over the different parts of the face and their functions), #0-10 (in sequence), the letters "a" and "b", and we learned two new songs ("Where is Thumbkin?" and "Skip to my Lou").  All in all it was a very productive week!  We also had some games to celebrate the upcoming Moon Festival and saw/participated in a reenactment of the story of the Moon Festival.

I would like to give special recognition to this week's Star Students: Herman, Rueben*, Jingo*, Elly*, Candy, Layla and Mars (Scroll down to see their photos).  This award is given once a day to the students who earn the most stars for good behavior and class participation.  We are so proud of the efforts of these students this week.  Keep up the good work!

As this is my first teaching blog post, I'll try to use it to establish what you may expect from this blog in the future.

First, let me say that I will update this blog as often as my schedule allows.  I feel that if my schedule becomes full, the priority should go to class preparation rather than updating this blog.  That said, I will do my utmost to keep you updated on all of the new and exciting accomplishments of your lovely children!

I am working on a Flickr web album at this url: http://www.flickr.com/photos/teachertherese/ and I'm also working on some videos to post to my youtube account so that you may monitor the progress of your children.

Contacting me is really quite simple.  Please send me an e-mail at tas7blue@gmail.com.  I will respond as promptly as possible and this is without a doubt the most reliable and efficient way to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns.  I welcome anything that you feel is important.  I am always looking to grow as a teacher and as a person and I will take anything that you say into serious consideration.  That said, the final decision on matters relating to Deer Class rests with me and the supervising staff at Sunshine.

Here's to a great year!
